A well-settled New Haven suburb of 22,180, North Haven is still rustic on outlying sections. The densely populated southern section is balanced by homes on 1/2 to 1 acre in the northern areas. The center of town has some tastefully restored pre-1900 homes and open spaces are preserved, although there is still land for building on 1-acre minimums. There are also typical suburban homes, reflecting the earlier expansion of the New Haven’s once growing population. Larger homes are available in the Ridge Road area and in recent subdivisions. Many of the residents are employees of Yale University in nearby New Haven, while others work locally or commute to Bridgeport on the Route 8 “corridor.” The residents reflect the diversity of the area, with many skilled workers, professionals, and executives.
The education system of North Haven successfully meets the needs of the diverse population, with four elementary schools, one junior high school, and one high school. There is also a comprehensive vocational program designed to supplement the academic studies and the high school offers a co-op work experience program with Pratt & Whitney Division of United Technologies.
Recreation
Wharton Brook State Park in nearby Wallingford provides for swimming, fishing, and picnicking. There are also both public and private tennis facilities. The cultural interests are focused on facilities in New Haven.
Shopping
Shopping can be done locally and in Hamden and New Haven; though a large shopping center is planned which will have major “anchor” department stores. With its location near Interstate 91 and the Wilbur Cross Parkway, North Haven has easy accessibility to other shopping areas as well.
